• Playlist Thursday: Pop Music

Posted on August 8, 2012 by in Music

Pop has such a broad description. Love it or hate it, it’s all over the radio. So why not embrace it and run to it. Often times it’s the catchy radio pop that makes my pace pick up the most, so here are some guilty pleasure pop songs I run to.

Don’t forget to check out the updated catalogue of fellow Playlist Thursday posts on the interwebz AND upcoming themes.

Something Old: Songs that are at least 5 years old. (I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.)
Something Current: Songs that have been released within the past year.
Something to Consider: This is the wild card category. Feel free to list any song: old, current, guilty pleasure, underground, whatever.

    Something Old

    Artist: Michael Jackson
    Title: You Rock My World
Side Note: MJ gets credit for previous fame that earned him the title King of Pop, which requires him to be in this theme. This might not be the first song you add of his, but it’s a good one. The Invincible album was pretty good. Not to MJ standards, but it was a decent album. I included the shorter version of the video. Here is the full version if you are so inclined to watch.
Quotable: “My life will never be the same. ‘Cause girl, you came and changed, The way I walk, The way I talk.”

    Something Current

    Artist: One Direction
    Title: What Makes You Beautiful
Side Note: C’mon, it’s catchy as hell and that’s all I have to say.
Quotable: ‘You don’t know, Oh oh, You don’t know you’re beautiful.”

    Something to Consider

    Artist: Miley Cyrus
    Title: Party in the USA
Side Note: Don’t laugh. This songs is hella good. OK, it’s crap but this friend recommended it a few years ago and it has never left my playlist. Yes, it works that much.
Quotable: “I’m noddin’ my head like “Yeah!” Movin’ my hips like “Yeah!”

So there you have it. The songs that are playing when I send out tweets saying “I feel like I’m getting faster!”

What did you think? Do you have any of these instant classics on your playlist?

What guilty pleasure songs are on your playlist?

    LOVE M.J.

In terms of your two other picks, not gonna lie, I’ve definitely bobbed my head to these songs on more than one occasion!

  2. YES!!! Guilty pleasure of mine is Chicago. Anything Chicago.

  3. So many guilty pleasure songs but I think that the one that I am most embarrassed about is Demi Lovato. Yup, I said it out loud.

  4. I’ll admit to having a Kei$ha song on mine.

  6. Hahaha yes! Although I really can’t stand Miley, I love One Direction. Teeny Bopper forever, or 4-EVA!

  7. LOVE this week’s “POP” category! All the songs make me happy :) Definitely agree on the current “What Makes you Beautiful.” That song is WAY too catchy!

  8. Oh no…you and Miley? Shame, shame! Oh wait…the Beibs made it to my list…and Britney…and Ke$ha.

Off to hang my head in shame…(and dance)

  10. Great list! I secretly love the miley cyrus song, too! Pop music is great!

  11. I LOVE that Miley is on your playlist! LOVE!

  12. I always love at the beginning of the long version for this song…where MJ and Chris Rock throw out all kinds of song references…too funny….my daughter has no clue who he is and it made me so sad!! She did say that he had a girl face though….I had to show her other videos to make her realize he wasn’t always like that :)

  13. Oh yeah, I definitely have those last two on my playlist – along with a slew of other pop songs. It is one of my favorite genres to work out to. Something about cheesy lyrics and boy bands just pumps me up. ;)

OOooooooo! I secretly love that Miley song! ha! Thanks for being brave and mentioning that one! Also love the One Direction song. I don’t run with music, but if I did these would all be on my list!

  16. Starting to really look forward to Thursday’s! LOVE MJ and the One Direction is a catchy song. They filmed their video along PCH, where I am currently living. If your readers are interested in a really fun and challenging trail race series.. Xterra (Pt Mugu) puts on races that start from the “sand dune” location in the this video and continues back through the Santa Monica mtns. Once you get to the top of the trail you have a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. Thank you again for an epic play list PR !

I agree–guilty pleasure Pop is really good during runs because it’s easy to absorb when I want to disassociate from the run. It’s like eating a banana before a morning run–fills the emptiness, quick to digest, loaded with sugars, nothing too complex that might disagree with me. Sometimes it helps to throw in a little Beyonce, Pink, Kylie, Katy Perry, etc…
