Playlist Thursday: Summer Songs

Playlist Thursday: Summer Songs

In celebration of the (official) start of summer, we present some classic summer songs (see links at bottom for other Playlist Thursday posts)!

Here is the format:

Something Old: These will be songs that are at least 5 years old. I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.
Something Current: These will be songs that have been released within the past year. I know, but you have to give me some leeway here.
Something to Consider: These will be songs that are not typically heard on the radio and may be by artists you’ve never heard of or considered running to. This is the wild card category, can be old or current.

Something Old

Artist: Bryan Adams
Title: Summer of ’69
Side Note: Take a trip down memory lane and rock out to this. I can’t really relate to the summer of 69… so I’ll leave it to you to fill in the gaps.
Quotable: “That summer seemed to last forever .And if I had the choice Ya – I’d always wanna be there. Those were the best days of my life ”

Something Current

Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen
Title: Call Me Maybe
Side Note: The hottest song this summer, short of Bieber and 1D. I resisted putting this on here, but I am a victim to pop songs on my runs. I flat out love em. I can’t explain it. I have Britney, Miley, Gaga, you name it. They make my feet run faster and who am I to argue with results. By 28 seconds it gets catchy as hell, damnit.
Quotable: “I threw a wish in the well, Don’t ask me, I’ll never tell”

Something to Consider

Artist: Vanilla Ice
Title: Ice, Ice Baby
Side Note: How do you cool off from the summer heat? With some ICE, ICE BABY. I know the lyrics and so do you. Don’t be ashamed. This song was running the world in the 90s. With Queen’s Under Pressure sampled, this song is “too cold, too cold.”
Quotable: “To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal. Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.”

Let me know what you think of these three? Winners? Losers?

  1. I am thankful that I cannot relate to the summer of ’69 myself, although I love the song and love him. And now my head will be playing Vanilla Ice all day long. Thank you, I think!

    thurs.thurs. baby.

  3. GREAT choices. SO glad to you Call Me Maybe on the list…I workout to that song ALL of the time. It’s just so catchy.

  4. Vanilla Ice and Brian Adams all the way! Ice Ice Baby.

  5. Hahaha I love the something to consider selection. The best playlist thursday yet! Although, I think you should consider a little Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch for your next one :)

  6. this post is my favorite to date!

call me maybe AND ice ice baby back to back?!

dancing in my cubicle as we speak and i don’t care who sees it!

    • we need video of this thing you call “cubicle dancing.”

  7. You must have incredible taste in music because I love all the songs you shared. ;) I could listen to Call Me Maybe on repeat while I run and have a smile on my face the whole time! I think I may be joining in next week!

    • If you do, let me know that way I can include your link on the post. We’d love to have another person join the Playlist Thursday party. :)

  8. I’m with Amanda. Ice, Ice Baby will now be stuck in my head. Love the ideas though every week!

  9. I was just looking for new music, remembered it was Thursday and that it was playlist Thursday! Summer of ’69 reminds me of rollerskating parties when I was a kid. And yes, I now have Ice Ice Baby stuck in my head. Thankyouverymuch

  10. confession: this whole call me maybe craze… i guess i dont get it. i had never heard it until this post. seriously. and im not exactly sad about that now that i have lol

  11. AMAZING list. I have all of these on my playlists!

  12. I loved that we both used Call Me Maybe in our Summer Songs edition of Playlist Thursday. :) Thanks for getting Ice Ice Baby stuck in my head, I guess this is payback for MMMBop and LFO’s Summer Girls…

  13. Ohhhh summertime music. Love it! Will Smith’s “Miami”! For some reason Shaggy’s “Boombastic” always reminds me of summer, too. (And his “Summertime”, of course.)

These are winners for sure…ice ice baby’s been on mine for a LONG time. ;)

  14. I think I’m too young, I don’t recognize any of these.

  15. I love that all three songs have a totally different tempo. I will def add these to my fav playlist to give it a little more variance!

  16. OK. This wins the award for my favorite post from you – EVER!! I’ve always been a fan of the summer of ’69 song. My mom and aunt (my mom’s best friend, not really an aunt by blood) have a special bond with this song (they won’t tell us why and I’m not sure I want to know anymore!!). The first CD that my parents ever got my sisters and I was Vanilla Ice. My sisters and I knew every word to that song (and embarrassingly, still do). And Call me Maybe? Love it.
