It’s race weekend for Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles and my last race of the year as a Captain for Team Chocolate Milk… so we have to do something AMAZING, right?
Let’s get right to the craziness. On Sunday there are two races: the RnRLA Half Marathon and the RnRLA 5K. Both are at 7 am and start and finish near the Staples Center…. and I will be running BOTH.
All out 5K
If both races start at 7 am, then I have to run and finish the 5K and make it back to the start line while they are still releasing corrals for the half. The finish line is a couple blocks from the start line so I’ll have to run the 5K as fast as I can, grab my medal, and try to make it back to the start, then run the half marathon.
Logistics
I’ve arranged with Team Chocolate Milk to hold my half marathon shoe tag and a some gear for the transition. Since I’ll need to run the 5K as quickly as possible, I’ll be running in a singlet and some lighter shoes. Once I finish, I’ll switch to a shirt and my half marathon shoes. That last part is important because I’ll have to use 2 separate timing chips for each race. Switching shoes will be a quick way to make sure I have the right tag for the right race.
Timing. Possible?
We’re about to find out. Last year, RnRLA was huge and there were plenty of corrals. If I start at the very front of the race, sprint the 5K and finish in 21 minutes (20? 19?) then take 3-4 minutes to change and make the 1-2 block run to the start line… I’m hoping to be starting the half within 25 minutes after the start.
The Half
Oh ya, there is that race, too. I’m sure I’m going to be exhausted as soon as I cross the start line. My legs will be like jello and I’ll still be trying to catch my breath. Once I cross the start line, I’ll be able to rest. LOL. That sounds funny, but I just need to officially “start” the half and then I can try to regroup. I have no plans as to what my finish time will be for the half. I’ll run it at a comfortable pace and enjoy the atmosphere and costumes like I did last year.
Expo Tweet Up
On Saturday, I’ll be at the Chocolate Milk booth at 11 am. Fireman Rob will be there as well and you can see all the gear that he has to wear (and even try it on) for Sunday. Come on by, say hello, grab a selfie, and enjoy the expo.
Saturday, 11am
Chocolate Milk Booth
RnRLA EXPO, LA Convention Center
>>The first 50 people who attend will receive a Team CHOCOLATE MILK prize.
I’ll be sharing my normal race weekend photos over on Instagram, so you can follow along in the fun. Last year there were tons of costumes and I’m assuming LA is going to bring it again with the fun and cheer. I’m looking forward to an exciting weekend. Hope to see you all there.
Any tips on running a fast 5K?
Will you be racing this weekend?
Good luck! My only question is where are you stashing the clothes and shoes you changed out of after the 5k? I assume you have someone there to hold on to them for you?
I would love to do it but I don’t think I can run the 5k that fast, maybe in 25 mins. I just need to find someone to hold my gear before I start the half marathon.
You are one brave guy! That is impressive! I have gone straight into workouts from a race, and other than a few crazy stares, it is usually okay, because you have that adrenaline rush after the race as the endorphins set in. I think you will do it, but good luck with both!
You are seriously a wild man Pavey!!! You got this!
You rock and are amaze !! Can’t wait to see it all play out! Have a great racex2!
You’re a beast!!! I’ll be running it this year and will look for you at the expo!
Best of luck!
21 minutes?? I’m suddenly not feeling as guilty for backing out of this challenge. ; ) You will rock it – I predict you will WIN the 5K and rock the half with energy to spare at the end!
Wow, can’t wait to hear how it goes! I never would have thought of doing something like that! Have a great time!
Good luck Pavey! I’ll hold down the Bay Area front while you’re gone:)
Can’t wait to follow along, sounds crazy and fun!
I’ll see you at the expo! And I bet you’ll do great in both races! There are soooo many half corrals, you’ll definitely make it in time :) Way to be a badass!
The title should not be 2 races 1 day. It should be two races one time! You are crazy, and amazing, and awesome all at once.
You are just awesome! That is all that I have to say except good luck and have a great time!
