I’m happy to say that I am back in action and cleared for take off. Last weekend, I felt a pain in the top of my foot and thinking the worst, asked for help across facebook and twitter. After receiving some good advice and input on what the possible injury could be, the treatment decided by Dr. Me was three days rest and a constant rotation of ice on the first 2 days and heat on the third.
I ran an easy 3.2 miles on Thursday. It felt ok. The good thing was that there was no pain, but I could tell that I was favoring the foot and putting undue stress on the rest of my body. Today, Friday, I just got back from a 5 mile run where I treated it as a normal run and just ran. Just ran for the fun of it. I needed to know if I was “back.”
Mile 1: 8:30
Mile 2: 8:39
Mile 3: 8:12
Mile 4: 8:12
Mile 5: 9.10
Traffic lights on the first and last mile, but those are solid runs and enough me to think I’m gonna be alright.
That being said, I have a trail race tomorrow:
It’s been on the calendar for a month and I was nervous if it was going to happen with the strain. Oh ya, I’m pretty sure the TOFP (top of foot pain) was simply a strain from lifting my big toe too much while running, similar to what one might do when wearing flip-flops or sandals. The race will be in the Marin headlands (where my 50 mile race will take place)and through Coastal Trail runs. It has an elevation gain of 2,740 feet. Time to get in that hill training.
… and I’m also going to do this:
I know, I just strained my foot a weekend ago, but If I feel that I’m cleared, I can resume my 50 mile training plan. And as it just so happens to be, my next two weeks scheduled as 58 miles and 56 miles. That means I won’t be running and additional miles that I wasn’t already planning on running.
See, makes total sense.

Am I being crazy?

YAY for no foot pain! YAY for racing! Glad to hear you’re back at it. Good luck with the race this weekend!
Oh and yes, you’re crazy but crazy in the best possible way! :)
What do you know, a page view and a comment!
Glad to hear your foot is better, but take care. Sometimes injuries can be re-strained very easily…
Have a great weekend!
glad the foot pain is gone! injuries STAAAANK!! be careful though. would hate to see this turn into something worse. just listen to your body, which I know you already do so just ignore me haha
So glad your foot is better already, that’s a relief! I am not ready for that 100 mile challenge right now, but it looks really fun. Have a great race tomorrow, too!
Glad you are feeling better. When your injury doesn’t sideline you do need to watch out for compensating by changing your stride, gait, etc. That alone can cause problems.
Happy that your foot is feeling better but be careful. I’d say if it starts to bother you tomorrow take a look at the big picture and pull out. What is the distance of your race tomorrow? Not the 50k?
Haha. No, I’m doing the 10 mile option, but I’ll run a few miles before the race starts.
Although when I originally wanted to register, I was going to do the 50k, but didn’t think my training would be ready. Good thing, I guess.
I’m glad you have no more pain!! Good luck with the trail race! Those are fun, but my ankles were sore for days afterward.
Good luck! Hope the foot is feeling better! Listen to your body and you’ll be fine!
All runners are crazy. Every time I go to my foot guy or my chiro, I hear, “I’d tell you to stop running, but I know you won’t..”
Go you! Have a great race!
“Am I being crazy?” We’re distance runners. The answer to that question is always yes. :) But I have no doubt that you can go out and beat that trail like it was pavement. Have a good (and safe) run!
I’d say go ahead and run with it (ha, pun) so long as everything feels good. I don’t think I could ever run 50 miles in a week, or 100 in two. I barely find the time to break 20. So best of luck to you on your race and the Strava challenge!
Happy to hear you’re back kicking. Good luck this weekend!
Looks to me like you’re def back! My husband is running the same challenge. It will be his first virtual challenge.
Enjoy the trail run!
Yay for no pain! I always think the worst when I have any aches that pop up. Glad it turned out to be nothing! Good luck with your race!
Good luck racing today! I’m glad you are back to running. For a brief second, I was ready for the virtual run but then I remembered I’m easing back into running after my knee crisis. I just want to do everything running because it sounds like fun! Enjoy!
