Usually I get declarations like, “You’re crazy running sucks.” But one I’ve gotten several times is why are you running again today, you ran yesterday?
I don’t understand why you put so much time into it… it’s not like anyone is chasing you. Or, don’t come in here complaining if you get hurt this weekend at XYZ race.
Or, my favorite… I want to run my first 5k, would you run it with me? Or how do I train for it?
I get the following often… a sincere/confused “why?” (in regards to runs/races longer than 3 miles) the standard ‘you know running is bad for your knees right?” and “on foot?” (usually after stating I have or will run more than 5 miles – and sometimes it is followed by the ‘why?”)
My brother asked me that first at Christmas when I mentioned that my 5 yr old daughter and I ran our first 5K. He says he only runs if he has to chase someone. (He’s a cop)
How many miles is in a marathon? How many miles are in a half-marathon? <– these 2 really grates my nerves. I mean, come on, seriously? I also get the confused "Why?/You must be nuts" like Josephine mentioned above when I say how many miles I am running. And of course, "What do you do if you have to 'go'?"
I hate it when people call it jogging… I say I can’t talk right now “I’m going for a run.” They say “oh you’re going for a jog? ” I want to say “ummm no I just said I’m going for a RUN! What’s it 1982?
Love it when people tell me I look good I say Thank you I’ve been running. The next question is coming… Why? Umm cuz I love it. The next question how much weight have you lost? I love to say “not much I’ve lost inches clothes fit better now” then they ask how many inches. Umm I don’t know it wasn’t a before and after with me. I didn’t join weight watches as a celeb where its in your contact they have to take pics. Ahhh I could go on…. But my time is up :))
I always get annoyed when people say that I jog. No, I am not a jogger. I am a runner. The difference is intent, not in process. Guess that makes us elitist. Runners. And I can live with that. :-)
There is the funniest youtube video about people running marathons- the runner’s co-worker asks him what he’s doing on a friday night and he says something like, ” I have to go to bed early so I can get up and run 20 miles” and the other person just stares at him… so funny! And I’m not even a real runner… I’ll have to find it for you!
I know what you mean. I actually injured my knee running 8 years ago and have only recently gotten back into it, but biking is actually more painful than running.
I think it’s funny when non-runners ask how fast I run to which I usually ask for what distance. They usually get confused by this and don’t understand why it is different depending on distance.
I’m 5-months pregnant and I’ve already heard, “Wait! You can still run?” more times than I person should have to in their lifetime (this is usually followed by “Doesn’t it shake the baby?”). :/
“You are going to ruin your knees, you know?” and my favourite is when ppl who don’t run come into the running store I work at and inform me that they are “going to run a 5k marathon”. Not all races all marathons!!
Ohhh and the guy who came in training for his very first 10km race ever and informed me that he was going to run Boston in the spring… Ummm you are gonna need to qualify for that one… And you are gonna need to run more than 10k…Just saying haha
My favorite was when I posted a pic of my half marathon finisher’s medal and said, “I won!” and people sincerely congratulated me. :-). Then I had to confess that I actually came in something like 25,765th…
It’s not a question, but I hate it when people say, “I wish I could run.” Then, the follow-up it up with how they’ve repeatedly tried to run or how their doctor has advised them not to.
I hate the ” I can’t run because I’m too heavy, or my feet get sore”
The questions I get often are How far is your Marathon, and have you ever attempted a 10k? I hear that’s hard ” lol (10k I consider my easy rest days)
What really grinds my gears is “I can’t lose weight because its too hard to work out regularly. But I really want to lose it. What can I do?” Makes me want to tear my hair out. You just told me one of the obstacles. YOU! Geeze
Why do you have to run with others? Why can’tyou run on your own? You’re perv coz you like to run with scantily clad women!
The first one is still bearable and I make sure I run alone these days even though I miss the discussions and exchanging ideas and tid bits on improving my run. The second comment – not a question is very damaging. Like Viktor Frankl, I’ve reached a point where these stupiditiues don’taffect me at all. I’ve developed immunity.
Thankfully, I usually get encouragement. I’ve even got a friend to agree to run a half-marathon with me in the fall and she sends me something encouraging almost every day.
I often get “better you than me” or “is this a New Year’s Resolution?” from strangers. I like that I can say I started way before January 1. Last weekend I had to take someone’s puppy back after it started chasing me, and the guy looked stunned when I mentioned I had 5 more miles to go. (I have to admit I was walking those miles. First 10K in Feb, not up to running that distance yet.)
I’ve got a friend who was always a size zero in high school and never had to exercise. I was always the chubby one, even when I was at my smallest. What can I say, God gave me curves, I just need to make them more defined. Anyway, the Depo shot screwed up her metabolism and lets just say she gained a lot of weight, especially after having 2 kids. Every time we talk, she asks me how the running is going and when I try to encourage her to start herself, she immediately starts off with “I’ve never had to diet or exercise in my life”, “I don’t even know where to start”, or the best of all “My feet always hurt after walking so much”. No matter what I say, she still hasn’t done anything to change it.
Haha welll…. I bring my iPad when it is too freezing to run outside and I’m forced to use the treadmill….so at least it is a bit bigger. Plus, I need the distractions when I’m inside, or I’ll go crazy!
What do you do if you have to pee on a “long run”?
i will do on road

Oh and that was not sarcasm, I love the last questions!! :)
How many miles is a half marathon? Is a 5k 5 miles?
Half Marathon- 13.1
5k- 3.1
I get the following often… a sincere/confused “why?” (in regards to runs/races longer than 3 miles) the standard ‘you know running is bad for your knees right?” and “on foot?” (usually after stating I have or will run more than 5 miles – and sometimes it is followed by the ‘why?”)
“What are you running from ? ” my friends who are not runners often ask me, though sarcastically :)….
“Dont you get tired by running so much ? “
I always get asked: WHAT ARE YOU TRAINING FOR? And I always answer: LIFE!
Ha Ha! Why do I have to be training for anything. I run and work out to feel AMAZING in my own body!! Isn’t that enough?? ;)
I love your answer to this question!
My least favorite: “How far is your marathon?”
I get that sooooo often
Eight months pregnant, running pushing my three-year-old son: “Are you trying to jog that baby out?”
Sarcastic Favorite: “How do you run that much?”
Favorite Favorite: “How do you run that much?”
It’s annoying yet I love that who ever is asking is impressed ;)
Why do you run?
You mean you do it for fun? << said with the biggest look of shock ever
Did you win your race? << yes, you shall see me at the Olympics in a few years!
My brother asked me that first at Christmas when I mentioned that my 5 yr old daughter and I ran our first 5K. He says he only runs if he has to chase someone. (He’s a cop)
Somebody already mentioned – “you know running is bad for your knees right?”
Lately I get questions like “In this?” or “don’t you get cold?”…
How many miles is in a marathon? How many miles are in a half-marathon? <– these 2 really grates my nerves. I mean, come on, seriously? Wait, you do that for fun?
LOL! Yes!! Great one! :)
Don’t you get bored?
How do you breathe?
<3
I always get asked “Why?”, my reply may sound a little bitchy, but I always say:
“Because I can”
I love it!
“WHY!?”
That’s a pretty common response to any conversation I have with non-runners about running!
Have you ever, you know, ‘gone’ while you run? Does it run down your leg?
Ummm. No.
No, you’ve never “gone” while you run? Or, no, it doesn’t run down your leg?
Running is bad for your knees. Why don’t you try biking?
Especially annoying because I injured my knee BIKING!
I know what you mean. I actually injured my knee running 8 years ago and have only recently gotten back into it, but biking is actually more painful than running.
“Don’t you get tired out there?”
I think it’s funny when non-runners ask how fast I run to which I usually ask for what distance. They usually get confused by this and don’t understand why it is different depending on distance.

I frequent get “You know they have invented the car. You don’t have to run everywhere.”
The how far is a marathon question is a big one? Drives me crazy…..and the How do you have time to run?
“You are going to ruin your knees, you know?” and my favourite is when ppl who don’t run come into the running store I work at and inform me that they are “going to run a 5k marathon”. Not all races all marathons!!

How far/fast can you run?
I love the “did you win your race?”
bahahaha yes!
“You really run outside in the winter?” from Boston.
Not a question but my boyfriend’s mom LOVES to tell me that “running is going to ruin your joints and ultimately hurt you more.”
My favorite was when I posted a pic of my half marathon finisher’s medal and said, “I won!” and people sincerely congratulated me. :-). Then I had to confess that I actually came in something like 25,765th…
ha ha ha I may try that one next time!
So which marathon are you running??…when I’ve done only halves so far..
Are you fast? <–compared to you for asking me, probably.
You're going to run twelve miles? {yes}
All at once? <–yes husband, that's how it works
How do you run when it's dark? <–Seriously. Walk away. Now.
Hehe. Awesome!
How far is this marathon? (When I just told them I’m running a 10K.)
Do you run every day?
You ran 10 miles and you liked it?!
how about.. what do you think about when running? Isn’t boring?
Answer: I think about everything and it my ass isn’t getting bigger when i do it. LOL!
Isn’t that bad for your body?
It’s not a question, but I hate it when people say, “I wish I could run.” Then, the follow-up it up with how they’ve repeatedly tried to run or how their doctor has advised them not to.

How was your race? Did you win? (this makes me giggle – I like explaining that I’m not going to “win” but that I do consistently beat myself!)
Thankfully, I usually get encouragement. I’ve even got a friend to agree to run a half-marathon with me in the fall and she sends me something encouraging almost every day.

How can you play words with friends while you run and not fall off the treadmill?
Fair question in my mind. From someone who doesn’t own a treadmill but works out on a elliptical regularly.
Haha welll…. I bring my iPad when it is too freezing to run outside and I’m forced to use the treadmill….so at least it is a bit bigger. Plus, I need the distractions when I’m inside, or I’ll go crazy!
You know, you are going to blow your knees out!?
The most frequent question I get asked? How often do you go running?
