For most of the year, I’ve found that logging my miles for the week has become more and more of a challenge. With a newborn infant at home, mornings can become hectic at the drop of a baby beanie. I still get out in the mornings… yesterday, I ran 8 miles with a 4:30 a.m. wake up. They used to be 6 a.m.
Instead, I’ve found a new way to get in my runs and maintain my precious sleep cycle: RUNch. Credit to @BlondePonyTail for introducing me to the term. I’ve been doing these since last year and am thrilled to have an official title for it. It’s a run during your lunch hour. I wrote a post about some tips if you are interested in giving it a try.
It started with helping a co-worker train for her first 10k, but I’ve embraced the routine and it has worked really well for me. I started off with only being able to do 3-4 miles and now I’m able to easily get 5 and if I push it, 6. Speed work anyone?
Also, I’ve been able to meet up with some great folks for RUNch dates. You never really know someone until you run with them. Well, that’s not true, but there should be a saying like that or something. I have a RUNch set up for today with a couple friends (here and here) and am looking forward to some warm miles along the SF Embarcadero. Above are some photos I’ve snapped on my runs during mid-day escapes. Enjoy.
If I got a lunch hour this would be a great idea! But I work nights so it wouldn’t really be the safest, running at 3 am…plus I can’t leave work for that long :(
I love it! I haven’t RUNched yet but will try and get one in soon! I’m gonna get my RUNch on!
Yeah! Glad you are spreading the #RUNch love! Get it!! RUNch dates sound fun too!
I do a lot of my runs alone, but I’ve enjoyed our “RUNch” time! It’s a perfect way to catch up with a friend and pass the time. Thanks, Pavey!
A RUNch sounds amazing! Too bad my lunch is only 35 minutes long! If I didn’t have to look presentable or respectable, maybe I’d try to squeeze in 4!
So…4:30 am it is!
I used to run on my lunch hour al the time when I worked in an office, now that I am in home care I just squeeze all my its into the early part of the day and run at the end. Runch is a great term for it!!!!It is a great way to fit in the miles too!!
I RuNCH on occasion. There’s a 3 mile loop from my office which is about all I can fit in at my pace. I really like it! It’s a little tough with my job because my office doesn’t really respect the lunch hour – lunch is for meeting clients, not for personal things. Yes, I know this is effed up. So I run anyway. It makes me easier to deal with.
I’ve tried it before but with no shower at the office it means being hot and sweaty for the rest of the day. And that’s not good for anybody!
I took my first RUNch today for an hour and feel great! I packed baby wipes (scented) and body spray which helped! I too have a newborn so mornings are a no-go for me. Plus I live in South Dakota so the afternoons are always warmer in the winter.
