Let’s take a trip down memory lane… what were the songs on your first running playlist? For the Something New I’m going to choose what was “new” at the time…. yes, this will immediately date my playlist, but it will give you a time frame of when I trained for my very first Marathon (spoiler alert: 2006).
Something Old: Songs that are at least 5 years old. (I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.)
Something Current: Songs that have been released within the past year.
Something to Consider: This is the wild card category. Feel free to list any song: old, current, guilty pleasure, underground, whatever.
Something Old
Artist: Blink 182
Title: All The Small Things (1999)
Side Note:Hey! Don’t judge. It’s whatever is going to get you through the next mile. Okay, you can judge a little bit. Remember their music videos? Remember music videos? They were kinda funny and this was when a popular video on TRL meant you had a popular single.
Quotable: “You’ll be at my show. Watching, waiting. Commiserating.”
Something Current
Artist: Nelly Furtado
Title: Maneater (2006)
Side Note: This was the album where Nelly hooked up with Timbaland… remember Promiscuous? THAT ALBUM. This was also the year that Justin Timberlake had Sexy Back, but that would have been too easy and we’ve talked about that one before.
Quotable: “Come on everybody what you here for?”
Something to Consider
Artist: Green Day
Title: American Idiot (2004)
Side Note: Almost this entire album was on my first playlist. The album was hot for a while — didn’t they make a Broadway Musical? I can’t hear any of these songs without thinking of having to do some of my first training miles on a treadmill. Funny thing is that there haven’t been any Green Day songs on my playlist for a while.
Quotable: “Don’t wanna be an American idiot”
And in case you didn’t know, my first marathon was in November 2006 in Florence, Italy with a finish time of 5:20. I’ll never forget how amazing it was, how much it hurt, how much I wanted to stop and how glad I am that I didn’t.
You never forget your first.
Don’t forget to check out some recent playlist post below, or add your own.

Is it bad if a couple of these are STILL on my running playlist??
I’d love to join y’all sometime, but I very rarely run with music. I could share my spin list…. :)
uhh i still like all the small things lol
LOVE Blink 182. So old school!
AHHH love me some Blink and Green Day :)
The year of Nelly + Timbaland + JT was epic. Had so many of those songs on my playlist.
American Idiot is still on my playlist. Oh, TRL that brings me back to high school!
Too funny because I think all of those were on my playlist back then too! My first marathon was also in 2006 :)
Maneater used to be my JAM. Especially at the clubs… oh my. I like all these songs :)
True confessions: One of my big marathon training jams was “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. There, I’ve said it.
My playlist consists of whatever Pandora plays for me! LOL!
Oh, I love this flashback … and how cool that you did your first marathon in Italy! My first running playlist came in 2010, though I’d been running for almost a year before that — the delay was because my old-school iPod Shuffle was still kicking, and I couldn’t justify replacing it until it stopped holding a charge in late 2009.
My first playlist was for early 2012, but I can’t remember any 2012 current songs I had on the playlist… Something old is Free Bird and something to consider is Knights of the Round Table from Spamalot.
Blink is still a good choice!
I remember being in the gym on a elliptical with my Discman… and the Spice Girls CD. Oy.
My first playlist was 2005. I used a sankisk mp3. Right now I’m uploading my music to a new nano and I’m about to lose a few of my favorites from that list. I still have “maneater” and “promiscuous”. I still use Eminem Lose Yourself on almost every run. Can’t forget Crazy Train, Aguillera’s Fighter, and Trick Daddy’s “Let’s Go”. Instead of telling myself that I’m old (not really..90 is old), I tell myself that I just had REALLY good music taste in 2005 :D
