runnersworldcookbook

Before we dive into Playlist Thursday, let’s take a look at the new Runner’s World Cookbook that just came out this week. I am not what you might call a “great chef,” but I can follow a recipe pretty well. No shame in my cooking game on looking over at the ipad or book to know “what to do next.” Here is the run down (pun totally intended):

  • Hardcover book
  • 150 recipes for “fueling up and slimming down”
  • Foreward by Deena Kastor, Preface by Joanna Sayago Golub
  • Recipe key includes: Prerun, Recovery, Fast, Vegeterian, Vegan, Low-Calorie, Gluten-Free
  • Chapters: Breakfast, Snacks/Smoothies, Salads/Dressings, Soups/Stews, Sandwiches/Pizzas/Burgers, Sauces/Pasta, Meat/Poultry Mains, Fish/Seafood Mains, Vegetables, Desserts
  • 250+ pages, color photos

I’m pretty excited to give some of these recipes a try and will definitely be sharing some photos. One thing I have not really addressed in my training is how I am fueling before and after my running. It’s something that, to date, I have been able to skate by on, but I feel like I’m getting close to a point where I need to be paying more attention to how I fuel my body in order to get faster. I’m glad this came in when it did and am looking forward to learning what I should be doing. When a cookbook has a preface called “what it means to eat like a runner,” it just might be the right cookbook for me.

Playlist Thursday:

This week we are going to look at some race day songs. These are three songs that have been added to my playlist specifically for this weekend’s half marathon. You heard that correct. Prior to tonight, these three songs WERE not on my playlist. Sometimes I like to add in a new song on race day just for kicks. Same rules as always.

Something Old: Songs that are at least 5 years old. (I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.)
Something Current: Songs that have been released within the past year.
Something to Consider: This is the wild card category. Could be old, current, guilty pleasure, underground, whatever.

Something Old:

Artist: House of Pain
Title: Jump Around
Side Note: I’ve shared this song before, but it has actually never been on my playlist. I’ve run to it in the past when it comes on Pandora, but I’m officially adding it tonight. A $1.29? Shouldn’t it be .99 cents? Dang. Sorry, I’m doing two things at once clearly. This is just a classic song that immediately transports you back to the early 90’s. Hopefully, some of you were alive then. Ha.
Quotable: “Pack it up, pack it in. Let me begin”

Something Current:

Artist: Miley Cyrus
Title: Wrecking Ball
Side Note: I’m not hiding anything here. Miley Cyrus is freaking GOLD on a running playlist. She may do some wacky things, but she truth is that she can actually sing. This will be my 3rd Miley song on my playlist and when you are running your tail off trying to shave 5+ minutes off your half marathon time, how perfect is the chorus “I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BALL.”
Quotable: “I can’t live a lie, running for my life”

Something to Consider:

Artist: White Rabbits
Title: Percussion Gun
Side Note: I completely forgot about this video. It has catchy vocals and an amazing drum sound. I’m not sure how it will work out on race day, it seems like it will be a toss up on whether or not it helps me keep pace or increase pace. Ideally, I see this as an ideal song for the first few miles of a race.
Quotable: “So I know which way to run”

There you have it. On most Thursday’s we take a look at three songs to add to your playlist. There is also a MUSIC tab in the menu bar if you want to look at some past themes.
